Have you been asked what would your last meal on earth be? Way back then, when I was an impressionable young adult, I would respond with the most exotic thing that I could think of, things that I have not tasted like champagne and caviar. Since then, I have had the good fortune of travelling the world and savoring an extensive variety of food. Without a doubt, I would pick Nasi Lemak - after all, deep down I am a Malaysian at heart.
I am excited to share my version of Nasi Lemak 'deluxe' which includes Acar Awak, an appetizing, sweet, sour and spicy mixed vegetable pickle - a popular dish from the Nyonya* cuisine. Its complex flavor comes from a long list of uncommon ingredients which include candlenut and shrimp paste. You just have to try it as it is unlike any other pickle or salad that you've had.
After a spicy meal, an ideal dessert to follow would be Sago Gula Melaka, a simple concoction of coconut milk, palm sugar and sago pearls. Eaten chilled. It is rich, creamy, floral, nutty and sweet in a good way that will draw a smile on your face proclaiming a satisfying meal indeed - what could be better than that?
